These large canvas works are a celebration of 60 years of the Poukai, an annual event that takes place on our marae Kōkōhinau situated in the small Bay of Plenty town of Te Teko.

A Poukai is a series of visits by the Kiingiitanga or the Māori monarch to marae across the Waikato, Tainui region. Kōkōhinau marae is one of the few marae outside of this region to hold a Poukai, a tradition that dates back to the 19th century.

Poukai provides marae and iwi an audience with the Kiingiitanga and was traditionally established to offer solace for the widowed, the orphaned, the bereaved and the destitute.

These days a Poukai is a place to gather, to meet, to mourn those who have passed, to share a feast and to deliberate issues of the time. This year on January 16th, Kōkōhinau held their 60th Poukai.
